The aim of this semester B project is to attract employment as a CG generalist. In an attempt to show this, I will be designing and developing two detailed settings. Each scene will test my ability to produce both high and low poly models, texture paint realistic projects, and animate realistic effects that suit the situation, expanding my portfolio and skill set. My final output will be two videos between 30 and 60 seconds long that will present the models, texture, and animation within the scenes effectively.
For this brief, I find it best suited to be evaluated under assessment strand 1. The progression of my final outputs will include some experimentation before a final product is created, and I believe having these trials together with my media product will benefit the final outcome somewhat, showing my ability to problem solve.
This semester will extend my creative and technical skills through the amount of detail I include in the final project. I will be designing two different environments, these may include but are not limited to a medieval camp, an aquarium, a modern living room, or a city street, and each will require different assets, animations, and visual effects. In semester A, I showcased my skills in a rather simple form, this semester I hope to push further into my skill set, and as I will be planning, designing, and creating each scene from scratch, I will be forced to think more artistically.
An inspiration for my idea to create an environment in a more realistic style came from the PlayStation 4 party game ‘That’s You’, developed by Wish Studios. As you progress throughout the game, the scene behind the core functions of the game changes, and you are shown different parts of a realistic scenery as they wait for you to complete your task. The design style is realistic, without trying to be real, which is something I aim to produce with one of my designs. This convincing art style is also present in a number of other popular games, including ‘The Last of Us’ by Sony, ‘Fallout’ by Bethesda Game Studios, and a lesser known example can be seen in the adventure game ‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter’ by The Astronauts.
I intend to aim this project towards potential employers. My key interest in this industry is split equally into 3D modelling and texture painting, therefore I hope to attract the attention of people within the CG generalist employment spectrum, with people who focus on either the modelling or texture painting of assets separately still seeing my potential.
The majority of my study will be primary research through the process of trial and error, however, while problem-solving, I may encounter other creator’s solutions to some problems that I may encounter, be it online or in class. I will be producing many different types of evidence depending on the content. I will be using screen recordings and time-lapses to show how I create and develop assets in my project. I may also present screen caps for items I wish to describe in more detail. I will also be sharing prototypes and still renders of completed assets at different stages of their creation.
